DYLAN

It was all an act. Everything was an act. Now, Dylan understood.

His finger jammed the door chime button. He hadn’t known that he couldn’t get back into the house from the backyard without a code. It made sense for security purposes.

At last, the door swung open. “Where’s the fire?” Max asked with uncharacteristic disapproval in his tone.

He pushed past the majordomo, saying, “Where is she?”

“Who? Ms. Carol?”

“Yes.” Without waiting for a reply, he started yelling. “Carol! Carol!”

“No need to shout. She’s in the library.”

Dylan strolled to that room, not caring that Max was on his heels. “I thought you were sincere. Thought you really missed my mom. How wrong I was!”

Carol stood up, frowning. “Exactly what are you talking about? Because I do miss her.”

“Dylan, you have no right to talk to Ms. Carol like this,” Max said.

“I can damn right talk to her any way I want to.”

The butler opened his mouth, but Carol put her hand up and said, “Just wait outside, please. I’m sure it’s just a misunderstanding.”

Dylan went right up to her and stared into her eyes. “Stop pretending. You said you didn’t know why she ran away.”

“That’s because I didn’t know. Still don’t. I suspect she ran because Ralph didn’t approve of Mickey. They never saw eye-to-eye. Mickey was a son of a policeman and Ralph came from totally different stock.”

“Oh, yeah? You, or your husband, or maybe both of you, drove her away because my mother didn’t want anything to do with the criminal enterprise. Your other daughter, though, my mom’s twin sister, probably has no qualms about inheriting the family business. Am I right?”

She gasped, blood draining from her face as she sat down. More like she fell back down to the chair. “Her twin?”

“Yes, I found out.”

“How, how…” Her head kept shaking.

“My mother told me.”

She pushed off the arms of the chair, trying to stand up. Instead, her eyes rolled back, and she slid from the seat akin to a rag doll. Instinctively, he grabbed her in time to prevent her from landing on the floor and hitting her head. He lay her gently down and checked her pulse, feeling all kinds of emotion—from anger to frightened concern. What if she’d had a heart attack? Had he caused that?

“Oh dear.” It was Max’s voice. “I’ll get her pills.”

When Dylan called 911, he heard running footsteps—presumably Max getting the pills. Sure enough, not a minute later, he reappeared with a bottle.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“Why don’t you talk to them?” He gave the phone to Max, who took it. Meanwhile, he gestured for Dylan to give one pill to Carol.

Dylan heard Max giving the operator the address and asking for Doctor Green to be notified.

“They’re on the way. About five minutes, she said. I’ll have Duke send them in when they get here,” Max said.

“Does she faint often?”

“Once or twice, it usually happens when she’s agitated. Dylan, I couldn’t help but overhear what you said. I don’t know where or how you came by the information, but I can bet my life that Ms.
